PhD Students

Parvin Mohammadiarvejeh is a P.h.D. student in the Department of IMSE at Iowa State University. She received her bachelor’s degree from Amirkabir University of Technology (Tehran Polytechnic) in Iran in 2016 and she got her master’s degree from the University of Tehran in Industrial engineering in Iran in 2019. Parvin is interested in data science, machine learning, optimization, and the healthcare supply chain.
Saiara Samira Sajid is a Ph.D. student in the Department of IMSE at Iowa State University. She is a student from Bangladesh who has completed her bachelor’s and master’s degree in Industrial & Production Engineering from Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology in 2017 & 2019, respectively. Saiara has a research interest in the field of data analytics and operations research and its application in the health system, supply chain management, and production system.
Saba Moeinizade Saba Moeinizade is PhD student in the Department of IMSE at Iowa State University.  She received her Master’s degree in the Department of IMSE at Iowa State University in May 2018. She got her bachelor degree in Industrial Engineering from Amirkabir University of Technology in Iran in 2016. Saba is interested in operations research, data analytics and machine learning. Her interest in application includes optimizing agriculture systems.
Fatemeh Amini is a PhD student in the department of IMSE at Iowa State University. She got her bachelor’s and master’s degrees in industrial engineering at Sharif University of Technology in 2016 and 2018, respectively, in Iran. Her research interests include System Optimization and Data Mining.
Mohammad Fili is Ph.D. student in the department of IMSE at Iowa State University. He received his M.Sc. degree in the department of industrial engineering at Sharif University of Technology in 2018 and bachelor degree in the department of Industrial Engineering at Iran University of Science and Technology in 2016. His research interests are data science, machine learning, data analytics, and operation research.

 

Mohsen Shahhosseini is pursuing his PhD in the Department of IMSE at Iowa State University. He earned a bachelor’s degree in Industrial Engineering from Khajeh Nasir University of Technology in 2012 and a master’s degree in Financial Engineering from Kharazmi University in 2015 in Iran. His research interests include Operations Research and Data Analytics.
 Vahid Azizi Vahid Azizi is pursuing his PhD in the Department of IMSE at Iowa State University. He holds a master’s degree in Industrial Engineering from K.N. Toosi University of Technology in Iran. His research interests include Mathematical programming, Supply Chain Management, logistics and scheduling.

 

 Luning Bi Luning Bi is pursuing his PhD in the Department of IMSE at Iowa State University.

He got his bachelor degree in Electrical Engineering from Beihang University in China in 2016. His research focus is the application of algorithms to the optimization problems in manufacturing systems and genomic prediction.

Carl Kirpes is pursuing his PhD in the Department of IMSE at Iowa State University. He holds a Masters in Systems Engineering, B.S. in Industrial and Manufacturing Systems Engineering, and B.S. in Mechanical engineering from Iowa State. He is interested in applied research in manufacturing focused on the Bill of Process and the impact the integration of industrial engineering concepts such as time studies, line balancing, and work instructions has on meeting production goals.

Carl is an Excellence & Innovation Leader for Andeavor. In this role, he accelerates innovation, leadership development, strategy execution, and value creation for the enterprise. Carl manages all phases of the Enterprise Business Improvement program including project ideation, approval, execution, tollgates, implementation, and tracking of all business improvements company-wide for this $24B premier marketing, midstream, and refining organization. In addition, he facilitates the evaluation and implementation of new and emerging exponential technologies, and has a strong focus on building a culture of Excellence & Innovation throughout the company.

MS Students
Ishan Patel is an MS student studying Industrial Engineering from the IMSE department. He earned his bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering from SV National Institute of Technology, India. His research interests include Machine Learning, Data Analytics, and Supply Chain Management.
Eric Sesterhenn is pursuing his M.S. degree in Industrial Engineering from the IMSE department. He received his B.S. degree in Industrial Engineering from Iowa State University in May 2020. His research interests are data analytics, data engineering, and operations research.
Sanjay Raj Thangavel is pursuing his M.Sc. degree in Industrial Engineering from the department of IMSE at Iowa State University. He earned his bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering from Sri Ramakrishna Engineering College in 2018. His research interests are Data Analysis, Predictive Maintenance (Industry 4.0) and ERP systems.
Viren Parwani is currently pursuing his M.Sc. degree in Industrial Engineering from the department of IMSE. He did his B.Tech in chemical engineering from Nirma University, India. His research interests are Scheduling, operations research and decision analysis.
Sidharth Sankhye is pursuing his M.Sc. degree in Industrial Engineering from the department of IMSE and certification in Supply Chain Management from the College of Business at Iowa State University. He received his B.Tech degree in Production Engineering from Savitribai Phule Pune University in 2017. His research interests are Scheduling, Supply Chain Management, Data Analysis and Operations Research.
 Undergraduate Students
Felipe Restrepo is a fourth year student pursuing a bachelor’s degree in Industrial Engineering. He is from Bogota, Colombia. His research interests include big data analytics and stochastic systems.
John Trettin is a fourth year student pursuing a bachelor’s in Industrial Engineering. He is from Newton, Iowa. His research interests are in data analytics, stochastic modeling, and operations research.

Post-docs
Mohammad Rahdar  Mohammad Rahdar did his post-doctoral training  2017 -2018 in the IMSE department at ISU.

Mohammad is an assistant professor at St Ambrose University.

Tristan Brown worked as a post-doc with Dr. Hu from 2011-2013. He is currently an assistant professor of energy resource economics at the State University of New York’s College of Environmental Science & Forestry. He is a licensed attorney and his research is directed toward the interplay between biorenewable pathways, economics and the law, particularly as they relate to the fields of tax law, international trade, and environmental policy.
PhDs
 Zhengyang Hu

Zhengyang Hu received his PhD in the Department of IMSE at Iowa State University in Fall 2019. Prior to joining this research group, he was a master student at Arizona State University. Currently, he is focusing on the application of operations research and statistical techniques to the design and analysis of lot-sizing and scheduling production systems.

Yanan Zhang received her PhD at ISU in Fall 2015. She is currently working at National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NERL). She received her Ph.D. in 2014. She got her bachelor degree in Thermal Engineering in China at 2008 and was a research assistant in Center for Sustainable Environmental Technologies in Iowa State University. Her research focuses on the techno-economic analysis of biofuels production and analysis, design of chemical processes using modeling software such as Aspen Plus. Yanan was co-advised by Dr. Robert Brown.

 

Leilei Zhang  received her PhD in the Department of Industrial and Manufacturing System Engineering at Iowa State University. She got her bachelor degree in Mathematics from Nankai University in China in 2009. Her interests in theoretical area are mainly in Linear Programming, Integer Programming and Stochastic Programming. Her interests in application include Supply Chain Management, Bioenergy Systems Analysis, and Bioenergy Market Analysis.

Leilei is currently working for FICO.

Mohammad Rahdar  Mohammad Rahdar received his PhD in 2017 from the IMSE department at ISU. graduated from Islamic Azad University – Tehran North Branch, Iran with a B.Sc. in Industrial Engineering. He also received my M.Sc. in Industrial engineering from Isfahan University of Technology, Iran. He is currently pursuing PhD degree in the department of Industrial and Manufacturing Systems Engineering at Iowa State University. His research interests lies in operations research specially in the field of bi-level programming, optimization applications, and decision making under uncertainty. He is co-advised with Dr. Lizhi Wang.

Mohammad is an assistant professor at St Ambrose University.

Qi Li  Qi Li received his PhD in the Department of IMSE with a co-PhD in Statistics at Iowa State University in May 2017. He got his bachelor degree in Industrial Engineering from Beijing Jiaotong University in China in 2012. His interests in theoretical area are mainly in Operations Research and Stochastic Programming. His interests in application include Supply Chain Management, Bioenergy Systems Analysis and Precision agriculture.

Qi is an Associate professor at Beijing JiaoTong University.

 

Mostafa Fawzy received his PhD in the Department of IMSE at Iowa State University in May 2015. He is originally from Saudi Arabia, where he got his BS and MS degrees.
Yihua Li rec

eived her PhD in the Department of IMSE at Iowa State University in May 2018. She got her bachelor degree in Automation from Tsinghua University in China in 2010. Her research interests include Mathematical programming, Statistics, Supply Chain Management in Bioenergy Systems, and Techno-Economics Analysis.

Yihua is working for IBM.

 

Shiyang Huang

Shiyang Huang received his PhD in the Department of IMSE at Iowa State University in May 2018. He got his bachelor degree in Industrial Engineering from Huazhong University of Science and Technology in China in 2013 and the MS degree in Arizona State University in 2014. His interests in theoretical area are mainly in Operations Research. His interests in application include Bio-economy and Behavior Operations Research.

Shiyang is working for Walmart Headquarter.

 

Master Students

 

Saba Moeinizade Saba Moeinizade  received her Master’s degree in the Department of IMSE at Iowa State University in May 2018. She got her bachelor degree in Industrial Engineering from Amirkabir University of Technology in Iran in 2016. Saba is interested in operations research, data analytics and machine learning. Her interest in application includes optimizing agriculture systems.
Goutham Ramraj received his Master’s degree in the Department of IMSE at Iowa State University in August 2017.

He currently works in Tesla.

  Alexandra Olsen  Alexandra Olsen was a Concurrent B.S. and M.S. student in Industrial Engineering at Iowa State University. She is from Olathe, KS. Her research interests include applied operations research in the healthcare industry.
Leilei Zhang  received her MS in the Department of Industrial and Manufacturing System Engineering at Iowa State University in August 2013. She got her bachelor degree in Mathematics from Nankai University in China in 2009.

Leilei is currently working for FICO.

Qi Li  Qi Li received his MS in the Department of IMSE at Iowa State University in April 2014. He got his bachelor degree in Industrial Engineering from Beijing Jiaotong University in China in 2012.

Qi is an Associate professor at Beijing JiaoTong University.

 

Yihua Li received her MS in the Department of IMSE at Iowa State University in April 2013.

Yihua is working for IBM.

 Narges Kazemzadeh received her Master’s degree in the Department of IMSE at Iowa State University in August 2013.
Minwen Yang graduated May 2012 with M.S. degree in the Department of Industrial and Manufacturing System Engineering at Iowa State University. Her research interests are in biofuel markets, particularly for analyzing the market competition of biofuels under certain government policies. She received B.E. in Mechanical Engineering and B.A. in Economics from Peking University, China.

 

 

 

Undergraduate Students

Sam Schwierking is pursuing a bachelor’s degree in Industrial and Manufacturing Systems Engineering and is from Grand Rapids, Michigan. Outside of school work, he is involved with the Iowa State’s Honors College and an at-large in Student Government under the Health and Wellness Committee. His interest areas are data analytics and supply chain management research.
 Colin Brown Colin Brown received a Bachelor’s degree in Industrial Engineering. He is originally from Moline, Illinois. His research interests include operations research, data analytics and supply chain management.
  Megan Wellner  Megan Wellner received a bachelors degree in Industrial and Manufacturing Systems Engineering. She is originally from Chanhassen, Minnesota. She is involved on campus in Tau Beta Pi Engineering Honor Society and the Engineering Ambassador and Mentor Program. Megan hopes to pursue a career in the food manufacturing industry after graduation.

Amanda Balaskovits

Amanda Balaskovits received her Bachelor’s degree in Industrial Engineering. Her is originally from the Chicagoland suburbs. Her internship experience involves working for a company that produces Betty Crocker cake mix, and she hope to pursue a career in the food manufacturing industry following graduation. 

 

Chase Chase Barton received his Bachelor’s degree in the Industrial and Manufacturing Systems Engineering department at Iowa State University.  He is originally from the Twin Cities area and now calls Denver, Colorado his home.  He is involved with the Tau Beta Pi Engineering Honor Society on campus. He will begin working with Guiping Hu’s research team in Fall 2015.
IMG_1096 Brandon Pongracz was a first-year undergraduate student majoring in Industrial Engineering at Iowa State University.  He graduated from Fieldcrest High School in Toluca, Illinois. He is a member of the Iowa State Running Club and Volleyball Club. He is also in the first year Honors Program. He was working with Dr. Guiping Hu’s research team in Spring 2015.

 

Lincoln Banwart Lincoln Banwartwas a first-year undergraduate student in the Industrial and Manufacturing Systems Engineering department at Iowa State University.  He graduated from Dowling Catholic High School in West Des Moines, Iowa. He is an active member in FLiE (Freshmen Leadership in Engineering), TEAM, and the first year Honors Program.   He began working with Dr. Guiping Hu’s research team in spring 2014.
Yuanhan Xu is from Luoyang, China. He is a senior student who is pursuing double majors in Industrial Engineering and Mechanical Engineering. His research interests are operational analysis, supply chain management, automation system design, and manufacturing. He has worked in the department of supply chain management in Eaton Cooperation as an intern. Expected to graduate as an honor student in spring 2016, Yuanhan plans to pursue a master’s degree in Industrial Engineering afterwards.
Emahesarae Marroquin was an undergraduate student in Industrial and Manufacturing Systems Engineering department at Iowa State University. She worked with Dr. Guiping Hu since the summer of 2011 through the Summer Program for Enhancing Engineering Development (SPEED). She is interested in supply chain management and economic analysis.
Benjamin Meier was a first-year undergraduate student in Chemical Engineering department at Iowa State University. He graduated from Mt. Horeb High School in Wisconsin. He is interested in pursuing a career in renewable resources. Since the spring of 2012, Benjamin has begun working in Dr. Guiping Hu’s research team, working on economic analysis of renewable transportation fuel. Besides his academic work, Benjamin is an active member in the University Honors Program and the Vice President of Fridley Hall.
Sam Berg was an undergraduate student in the Industrial and Manufacturing Systems Engineering department. He graduated from high school at New Life Academy in Woodbury, Minnesota. Since January 2013, Sam has been working with Dr. Guiping Hu, Dr. Paul Componation, and Graduate Student Jordan Hansen on their research of systems engineering effectiveness. Sam is also a member of The Engineering Ambassadors and Mentors Program as well as an Ambassador for the Industrial Engineering department.
Tim Bancks was a first-year undergraduate student in the Industrial Engineering department at Iowa State University.  He graduated from Linn-Mar High School in Marion, Iowa.  Tim began working with Dr. Hu’s research team during the 2013 spring semester, focusing his work on the economic analysis of the production of renewable transportation fuels.  Tim is also an active member of the University Honors Program and is highly involved in university club sports.
Rachael Meyer was a second-year undergraduate student in the Industrial and Manufacturing Systems Engineering department at Iowa State University, and is pursuing a minor in Economics as well. She graduated from Johnston High School in Des Moines, Iowa. She is an active member in ISU’s Minds of Tomorrow organization and the ISU Archery Club. She began working with Dr. Guiping Hu’s research team in spring 2013, working primarily with graduate students researching the optimization of different biofuel pathways.
