Industrial engineering team wins broomball championship
A team of industrial engineering students won the Iowa State University fall 2019 intramural broomball championship on Nov. 17, 2019. Courtney Middelkoop, a M.S. student in IE, scored the game’s only goal about midway through the second half to give the team the 1-0 edge. This marks the second year in a row that an IE team won the championship. Big thanks to industrial and manufacturing systems engineering assistant teaching professor Mike Helwig for his continued support of the team.

Students in Industrial and Manufacturing Systems Engineering Associate Professor Rick Stone’s I E 271: Applied Ergonomics and Work Design course got out of the classroom and into the pool for some real hands-on learning. The pool was meant to simulate a zero gravity environment and students performed maintenance activities on a structure that was meant to resemble parts of a space station.

Leslie Potter, a senior lecturer in Industrial and Manufacturing Systems Engineering, spent this past school year serving as a coach for Wave Droids #13206, a high school robotics team based in Waverly, Iowa. The team is sponsored by IMSE and advanced all the way to Super Regionals during this year’s competition season.

IMSE class applies engineering techniques to rescue operations
Rick Stone, associate professor in IMSE at Iowa State, took his IE 271: Applied Ergonomics and Work Design class on a field trip to the Gilbert-Franklin Township Fire Station earlier this week to learn about ways they can apply engineering techniques to make rescue operations more efficient. Big thanks to Gilbert-Franklin Twp. Fire and Rescue Agency and Story County Sheriff’s Office for spending their time teaching the students about the logistics of rescue operations.
