Flexible Electronics and Additive Printing Laboratory (FEAP)
Dr. Qin received his bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering and Automation from Zhejiang University, China. He finished his Ph.D. study in Industrial Engineering with a focus on micro/nano manufacturing at North Carolina State University.
Dr. Qin’s research areas include novel additive manufacturing processes, rapid prototyping methods and tools, and manufacturing systems based on inkjet printing and laser ablation for flexible electronics and optoelectronics. His research interests include scaffolds fabrication for biomedical applications, laser ablation, real-time monitoring and automation, CAD/CAM systems, 3D printing, topography optimization, multi-material and multi-scale fabrication based on additive printing. The FEAP lab seeks applicants for two PhD scholarship positions (open until filled):
Project 1: Process control of electrohydrodynamic inkjet printing
Electrohydrodynamic inkjet printing applies high voltage between a nozzle and substrate to achieve high-resolution patterns in micro/nano scale. The PhD student will work in the micro/nano additive printing platform to perform sets of experiments in terms of sensor fabrication and validation. A strong background in programming, electronic device testing, process control, or data analysis will be preferred.
Project 2: Laser ablation and sintering on polymer films
The PhD student will work as part of a collaborative project to investigate laser ablation of micro-channels on flexible polymer films, and laser sintering of metal particles on films. The PhD student will study the material property of different polymer films by testing different working conditions of excimer laser ablation. The optimal resolution of micro-channel will be within 20um with clean surface finish. In addition to experiments, modeling and simulation of laser ablation will be studied to further demonstrate process control of the channel fabrication.
The ideal candidates will have a BS or master degree, with strong background in microstructural characterization, mechanical design/testing, electronic device design/testing, programming, and/or laser based fabrication. It is desirable that the candidate has practical knowledge and experience in Matlab/Python/C++/C# programming, LabView, Ansys, Solidworks, and/or COMSOL. Data analysis software like origin or JMP will be valued for the position. Excellent communication skills (verbal, presentation, and writing in English) are required to enable effective interaction with program managers, technical peers, scholars, and sponsors.
