Welcome to The ATHENA Lab

The Augmentation and Training of Humans with Engineering in North America Lab, or ATHENA Lab for short, was founded in November 2015 by joint work between Dr. Richard T. Stone and Thomas M. Schnieders. Dr. Stone’s original lab, the Human Performance and Cognitive Engineering Lab, began in the Fall of 2008 with the arrival of Dr. Stone at Iowa State University. In its 7 years, it grew and evolved, shifting its focus to human augmentation and eventually became the ATHENA Lab.

“The ATHENA Lab exemplifies the ways in which research at Iowa State University is preserving and enhancing the safety and quality of life.” — Alliance for Iowa State

“A noble ambition for an unpretentious laboratory.” — Iowa Public Radio

“The work done in Iowa State University’s ATHENA Lab is all about helping people work better, but perhaps because of this main goal, it doesn’t feel like work.” –Lab Manager
