Iowa State researchers formulate InterchangeSE project to study interactions between different modes of travel
Researchers explore stress levels of people interacting in traffic systems through use of augmented reality techniques When you drive through an accident scene, do you feel nervous? Perhaps stressed by the cars swerving in and out, slowing to a crawl and then speeding up. And does your stress affect the traffic situation around you? Researchers at Iowa State University (ISU) are organizing exploratory studies to find the impact of stress levels on various actors in traffic incidents. Anuj Sharma, a professor of civil engineering at ISU, is the principal investigator of the project “InterchangeSE: A Federated Multimodal Simulation Environment for Studying Interactions between Different Modes of Travel.”

New Patent!
"Augmented tutoring," Mathan S, Dorneich MC, Whitlow S and PM Ververs, U.S. Patent No. 9721480” (2017).
An augmented tutoring system is provided that includes a simulation device, at least one sensor and a controller. The simulation device is adapted to provide a simulation that has an objective to accomplish by a student, wherein to achieve the objective a plurality of tasks must be correctly completed. The at least one sensor is adapted to monitor a cognitive state of the student while engaged with the simulation. The controller is adapted to process cognitive state information from the at least one sensor and to process student progress information relating to the completion of each of the tasks. The controller is further adapted to provide feedback to the student based at least in part on the processed cognitive state information and the processed task completion information.

HFES YouTube Video Contest Winner
The Human Factors and Ergonomics Society (HFES) recently announced the winners of their annual video contest based on the question, “How does human factors/ergonomics help people?” Desmond C. Bonner, human computer interaction and industrial engineering PhD student, won second place for his video entitled “That’s Human Factors!” Good work, Desmond!

ISU Graduate College Research Excellence Award
Euijang Yang was awarded the Summer 2016 ISU Graduate College Research Excellence Award for outstanding research accomplishments as documented in their theses and dissertations. These students are also expected to be academically superior and able to not only do research, but develop a well written product. The intent of this program is to recognize “the best of the best” graduating students who have submitted theses and dissertations.
