Advising Appointments

While you are always welcome to stop in, during the registration period it's best to make an appointment. If you want an appointment, please indicate your preferred days/times in the space provided on the Schedule Review page, or call Lori (294-0129).

Registration Information

IE 101

This course is required and needs to be taken before or concurrently with IE 248. You must pass the class with an “S” grade to graduate.

Changes in Degree Requirements
  • IE 148 A substitute for Engr 160 or 161 in the Basic Program (also accepted by the College of Business as a prerequisite instead of Com S 103)
  • Math 267 Elementary Differential Equations should now be taken instead of Math 266.
Class Schedule Planner

Use the Class Planner to prepare for class registration. This is a planning tool only and does not register you for classes or reserve classes. To register for classes, go to AccessPlus, click on the "Student" tab, and select "Class Registration" from the menu on the left.

Community College Courses

The Course Equivalency Guide lists the courses offered at regional community colleges and shows the matching ISU courses. Note that the individual colleges or departments at ISU determine how each course will apply toward your degree program regardless of how a course is listed on the equivalency guide. Please note that equivalencies are date-specific and dependent on when the course was taken.

Co-ops/Internships

Planning a co-op or internship? Read about it at Engineering Career Services (ECS). You will need to get the approval of ECS in 301 Marston to register for IE 396 or IE 397. Two separate forms must be completed for both the IMSE Department and ECS. The departmental form is available from your the adviser. The ECS form is available on-line. Your adviser has to sign both forms.

Credit Load

To be a full-time student, you need to enroll in 12 credits during the fall and spring semesters and 9 credits during each summer session. The maximum number you can take without special permission is 18 credits during the fall and spring semesters and 12 credits per session during the summer. (Honors students are allowed to take 21 credits during the fall and spring terms.) If you have questions, see your adviser.

Engl 314

If you can’t get into this course, try again during a later term. This course is required by many different departments, so demand is always high. However, if you’re a graduating senior and can’t find an opening in this course, talk to your adviser ASAP.

Another alternative is to take a similar course at another four-year institution, but consult with the Admissions Office and your adviser first. For more information about transferring courses, see the Transfer Credits section.

Graduating Seniors

Students who are graduating must fill out an Undergraduate Application for Graduation. You may pick one up from the IMSE office or use the on-line form.

If you plan to take any courses outside of Iowa State during your last 32 credits, see the adviser to get prior approval from the college office.

Now is a good time to take the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) Exam . Review materials are available and can be checked out from the IMSE office.

Helpful Information
Minors Related to Business

Check the requirements for Business Minors to determine what courses will apply and talk to your adviser.

Social Science & Humanities (SSH) Requirements

You need 12 total credits in this area from the Department Approved List. Note that there are some special criteria.

  1. One course (3 credits) must satisfy the university’s U.S. Diversity requirement (see the Department Approved List).
  2. One course (3 credits) must satisfy the university’s International Perspectives requirement(see the Department Approved List). This requirement is satisfied if you have participated in a Study Abroad program. You will still need to satisfy the total 12 credit requirement in the SSH area.
  3. Six credits need to form a sequence of courses, i.e., they need to be in the same subject area/department.
  4. Six credits need to be numbered at the 200 level or above.
Study Abroad

Meet with your adviser If you are planning to study abroad. For more information about Study Abroad programs visit the Engineering International Programs or the ISU Study Abroad Center.

Transfer Credits

Before you register for a course at a different institution, go to the Admissions Office in 100 Alumni Hall and consult with a transfer credit evaluator about the process. Then talk with your adviser to determine where the course can be used in your degree program. By checking this out ahead of time, you’ll be sure to take a course that will help you graduate. Remember - you must get at least a C grade to transfer a course.

U.S. Diversity and International Perspectives

Remember to check your choices against the Department Approved List of SSH electives.
