Processes to Produce Program Outcomes

Program outcomes are determined by the Industrial Engineering faculty based on the program educational objectives with inputs from various stakeholders ranging from faculty and students to industries and alumni.

During the most recent program educational objective evaluation from 2004 to 2005, changes were made in the program educational objectives. However, these changes resulted in reinforcing the existing program outcomes and strengthening the linkage between the outcomes and the educational objectives. Hence there are no major changes in outcomes since the last ABET visit in 2000. We note that there are a few minor rephrasing and clarifying changes in response to such changes in ABET (a) through (k). We also note that the word “energy” was replaced by the word “controls” in the previous version of outcome (n) in response to a change in Criterion 8 specified by IIE.

The primary means of achieving these outcomes is through the course work specified in the IE curriculum course requirements. Extracurricular experiences such as, internships and student organization activities, provide additional opportunites for IE majors to build upon their knowledge and skills.

Our premise is that we can have significant impact on the achievement of program outcomes through 12 core courses that are required for IE majors. These courses serve as a primary vehicle for assessment, tracking, and continuous improvement activities. The mapping of the 12 key courses to the 16 outcome items is shown below.

We note that this mapping shows the currently focused outcome items, not necessarily all the possibly related outcome items for each course. We now proceed to briefly describe the process for assessing, evaluating, and improving the program outcomes.
